Tarot Journal

Carl Jung believed that symbols are one of the most direct ways to access the unconscious.

The Tarot is not a fortune-telling device. It is a collection of symbols and stories that invite us to pause, reflect, and notice what is moving beneath the surface of our lives. They reveal patterns, highlight tensions, and open doorways to growth.

Each day I draw a card. I study its colors, figures, and place in the sequence, and then journal what it evokes. This isn’t about predicting outcomes. It is about building a relationship with my own intuition and expanding awareness of how the ego protects, how old patterns repeat, and where new choices might be possible.

In this way, Tarot becomes both a mirror and a guide. The cards draw on archetypes that bring unconscious patterns into view, while also encouraging us to pause and consider our choices with fresh perspective. By working with their imagery, we can see more clearly where old habits shape our responses, and where new possibilities might be opening. This practice does not offer ready-made answers, but it sharpens awareness — making room for decisions that are more thoughtful, intentional, and aligned with who we are becoming.

This journal is a record of my Tarot practice — a space where symbol and transpersonal psychology meet. The cards do not give answers, but they make the inner landscape more visible, which allows for more conscious and intentional choices.

The Knight of Cups
Will you be my Valentine?
Ready to go - the Knight of Cups, wearing his winged helmet and boots, sitting upright on a graceful white steed, is ready to move in search of beauty and love. He holds a large chalice (cup) as if he is going to offer it to one who is dear to his heart, or possibly bring to the one he seeks out? It is an expression of his inner self which he is carefully and cautiously bringing to the outer world. Not as wise as the queen of cups, nor courageous as the king, he wears protective armor. The armor bears a pattern of red fishes! Fishes are symbols of intuition and spiritual nourishment - his quest is in pursuit of the emotional, not physical or material. His actions are guided by intuition rather than by external forces.

In the background is a desert and mountain. He can easily cross the stream which represents a steady flow of emotions. The stream is nourishment when the conditions are dry or unforgiving. The Knight is moving forward and must consider his pace - too swiftly and he may stumble - too slow and he may miss his chance in his romantic pursuit!

Knight - Action, initiative, moving forward
Blue - Intuition, dreams, emotional depth, feeling and imagination
Red- Passion, life force
Yellow - Clarity, optimism, potential

The Paige of Cups
Stop being so serious, let’s have fun!
The paige in the tarot deck represents a novice - someone who is enthusiastic and eager, yet has much to learn. He holds a yellow chalace (cup) that holds potential, possibility and creativity. The fish is greeting him as if to say, “Surprise! Let’s swim in this field of feelings and creativity.” Behind him is a stream that represents movement, fluidity, ease. Like the fish, he can take a dip — swim in the vast potential if he so chooses.

His clothing is blue and red - he is passionate and full of possibility, ready to grow, to blossom in his emotional life. He’s ready to be playful, to connect, to bring his joy and love to others.

Paige - Novice
Blue - Intuition, dreams, emotional depth, feeling and imagination
Pink- Tenderness, openness (receptive)
Yellow - Clarity, optimism, potential

The Ten of Cups
You’re ready. Take the risk, choose your path and reach for even more abundance.

What a joyful card! Yellow saturates this card and holds the ten cups in a rainbow of openness, and optimism. Ten chalices (cups), high in the sky, invite prosperity and happiness. This card is a gentle invitation to exercise courage and to bring closure to one chapter and create a rich, satisfying and harmonious beginning.

A man and a woman look out into the horizon where a stream separates two worlds. On the right side of the card: a stream, children dancing, a cottage in the woods and a couple with arms reaching out as if to welcome what is to come. On the left side: green grass, and trees - verdant, yet uninhabited.

There is a possibility. Whether the family chooses the life they have made to the right of the stream or pursues the other path, abundance and good fortune awaits them. They are solid and stable - grounded - they’ve created safety and space for the kids to play.

Material wealth and happiness can coincide when there is conscious choice and connection to friends and family. They are sources of support and love.

10 - An ending and a beginning - ten can signal fulfillment of a journey and point to new beginnings, learning and starting a new cycle
Yellow - Clarity, optimism, potential
Green - Growth, healing, abundance, harmony, renewal
Red - Vitality, action, passion, desire, courage

King of Wands
Lead with your heart.

The King! Draped in a red gown and wrapped in a green cape full of textures and patterns the King of Wands is firmly grounded, seated on a sturdy throne stamped with lions and salamanders. He steadily holds his wooden staff , alive with green leaves , and gazes out to his followers who respect and adore him for his creativity, conviction and flexibility. He is ready to act, if required.

The King of Wands is a chameleon, he can dream big and he is anchored to reality. He can be silly and serious. He can be a student and a teacher. He has courage to live his life aligned to his passion and interests and in doing so, he continues to find new outlets for his imagination; he creates new audiences for the arenas in which he operates.

Overall, the King is a master. Courageous enough to lead, wise enough to hold power without losing control and resilient enough to channel passion into purpose and overcome obstacles. His energy gives life and he creates and sustains growth, even when the environment is harsh or unforgiving. He is able to channel energy not just for personal gain but for the good of others.

King - Mastery, maturity, responsibility, and leadership
Wands - Creativity, willpower, action, vision, energy, transformation
Yellow - Clarity, optimism, potential
Green - Growth, healing, abundance, harmony, renewal
Red - Vitality, action, passion, desire, courage

Judgement (XX)
Drop what’s heavy and grab on to what’s light.

First, I notice that this card is one card removed from the end of the major archana which represents the journey of life (some say journey of the soul). Major archana, from a Jungian perspective, take us on the journey of individuation. Beginning with the Fool (innocence) and ending with the World (integration).

I notice that this card is jam-packed full of images, symbols and textures. The complexity makes my brain hurt! The angel (Gabriel?) blows the trumpet from the heavens. From the trumpet hangs a white flag with a red cross - a sign of purity and clarity. In response, the dead rise up, climbing out of their boxes, arms spread, as if they are saying, “Lift me to the heavens where I might become one; where I can experience ultimate fulfillment as I leave the material world (naked as I came in) and enter the spiritual world.” In this card, I sense the freedom of casting off those things that bind us to the material world and entering into a realm where status, wealth and possessions are useless, and instead one accepts (not strives for) truth, beauty and simplicity.

Blue - Intuition, dreams, emotional depth, feeling and imagination
Yellow - Clarity, optimism, potential
Grey - Neutrality, liminal space

High Priestess
There can be two or more right answers. Don’t leap to conclusions!
The deeper meaning hasn’t surfaced yet.

The high priestess sits in between two pillars, Boaz and Jachin representing the feminine (B) and the masculine (J) (Hebrew Bible: 1 Kings 7:21 and 2 Chronicles 3:17). The pillars represent dualities: conscious and unconscious, seen and unseen, logic and intuition, passive/proactive, etc. She doesn’t pick one side or the other; she stands in the middle; the space where two opposites meet and new understanding begins. The liminal space , which is the space between two states of being: not quite here, not quite there; full of uncertainty and potential, uncomfortable, but full of possibility.

The High Priestess’ wisdom comes from being able to hold the whole polarity. Intuition and intellect, silence and speech, pause and response — without collapsing into either extreme. This is not easy, however, she is able to do it because she stays calm and centered, even when things around her are confusing.

She doesn’t act on impulse or let her emotions take over. Her mind and her intuition work together. Her thinking helps her explain what she feels, and her feelings help her thinking come alive. Because she takes time to listen and respond instead of just reacting, she makes thoughtful choices that help her move through the world with confidence and grace, even when she doesn’t know what will happen next. She is truly adaptive.

Green - Growth, renewal, regneration; life
White - Purity, openness, receptivity
Pomegranates - Fertility, mystery, and hidden knowledge
Crescent Moon - Cycles, emotion, reflection, waxing and waning
Cross - Sacred and human, heaven and earth, spirit and matter, inner and outer; balance
